The Coach House
This former coach house built circa 1868 was full of character but greatly lacking in space. A previous loft extension proposal had been refused by the council due to its visibility from the road and the owners were looking for new ways to increase and improve the space. We worked closely with the clients to establish their aspirations, discussing a number of options to extend and improve the building without it being seen from the front, or undermining the subservient nature of the property which the planners wanted to maintain. This required an imaginative and practical approach resulting in a design which conservatively extended the whole of the back of the house without disturbing the rooflines.
The final design provided a glazed rear extension at the ground floor allowing light to flood the dark interior. A two meter extension above allowed the 1st floor to be completely reconfigured which rationalised the layout and increased the room sizes. The extensions used traditional materials to blend with the existing, subtly enlarging the footprint and improving the quality of the spaces within, without overpowering the historic fabric.
